Here is a 4 bay example in a busy city centre with armrests and cover plates to the legs
Bs12 Bertie backrest (tubular)
If you need a seat with back support then the Bertie backrest is a great choice for demanding street environments. There are two options - a timber backrest or a tubular backrest - this is the Bertie tubular. We have designed the back to offer more transparency than the solid timber version - useful in front of shop windows. Just like the bench version it is generously proportioned to accommodate three adults (or more if you choose the 4 -bay version). Both are extremely elegant yet strong and built to last -fabricated from thick gauge materials means nothing is going to come loose or fall off or bend. Both Bertie seats (bench and backrest) have proved to be our most popular seating for the public domain. Starting at £1850 it can be supplied with the following extras.
Armrests - not a problem. Curved L shape to match the seat and welded into frame and backrest.
Skateboard deterrents - built in to the panel dividers to look as one (you’ll hardly notice them)
Coverplates - a neat solution for unit paving. These go around the bottom of the legs to conceal grouting and badly cut paviors.
Fixing is only available to a below ground concrete foundation.
We use quality timber on Berties as it is more comfortable to sit on, temperature wise, than metal, stone or concrete - especially in winter. We use top quality FSC Iroko firstly because it is sustainable and as it is one of the most durable hardwoods available in the UK. It doesn’t really splinter or warp like some other hardwoods can when used outdoors such as cheaper Oak Beech or Robinia. Seat panels are replaceable and can be ordered direct but need to be fitted on site by someone suitably qualified.
As all timber Iroko will weather and lose its golden surface colour so if this isn’t the look you are after there are a few alternatives that help to sustain colour. The first is oiling (with teak oil); second is staining (with a quality stain) and lastly there is occasional pressure washing/sanding to restore the colour. They all work but have some maintenance liabilities. Bertie backrests are supplied with (teak) oiled Iroko as standard.
Power coating or for really tough situations 316 marine grade stainless steel with electropolished finish
